Company

A software company for the person who is the bottleneck.

Inertia builds business software for people who are the bottleneck in their own company. Some of it we build for a client and hand over. Some of it we build and run ourselves as subscription software, like RVDesk for mobile RV repair and RevWin for engineering firms, and we keep improving it as people use it. That's what makes the rest better: every update to one of our products teaches us something we bring to the next build, so the code we start from keeps growing and stays current with best practice. Some of it has a screen you work in. Some of it has no screen and just runs. Either way we start with discovery, because the problem is never the one you called about.

How we find it

32 years in sales taught me the job was never the pitch.

Before I led development at Inertia, I spent 32 years in sales leadership. What made me good at it was curiosity: the need to know what the problem is and how to solve it. It turns out that's the same skill that produces good software.

  • Discovery

We ask until the answer stops changing. The first three answers are usually symptoms.

  • Critical thinking

Then we argue with it. If what you asked for won't fix what you've got, we say so before anything is built.

  • Reflection

We watch what you actually do, not what you say you do. The tool fits the real Tuesday.

  • Outcomes

Every tool we build does one of three things: saves time, increases capacity, or makes money. If it doesn't, we don't build it.

How we work

James runs discovery and leads every build. Each build gets its own engineering lead and an extended team of specialists staffed to what it needs: engineering, design, marketing, data privacy and cybersecurity, AI governance, data integrity. We've shipped products across unrelated industries: RV repair, AEC capture planning, monthly billing reports, a sales team selling land due-diligence research.

James

James Moss runs a curiosity shop.

I'm James Moss, founder of Inertia Solutions. For most of my career I've been in sales and sales leadership. It took me 32 years to figure out that my superpower is curiosity. I need to know what the problem is and, if I can, how to solve it. That thirst for discovery is what made me good at sales. The truth is I never loved the sell-anything-to-anyone part of it.

It took a couple of years of running Inertia as a successful fractional sales agency to realize that my company isn't a sales company. It's a curiosity shop. We use deep discovery to get to the root of the friction in a business.

My favorite discovery questions are "Wow, really?", "Tell me more about that," and silence while I nod. Those three get founders to think out loud about the friction in their own business model. Then we build tools that do three things: save time, increase capacity, make money.

And the truth, which is hard for me to swallow: small companies don't fail because they built something bad or because they can't sell it. They fail because the founder burns out. Our job is to give founders peace.

Inertia is named after a boat. It was my daughter's name for it. Always moving forward.

Named after a boat. Also after the law.

Newton's first law: an object in motion stays in motion, unless a force acts on it. Inertia is what keeps you moving. Friction is the force that stops you. We do friction.
