Can I put my consulting method into software?

The short answer

Yes, if the method already works and you're the one who has to run it. Software can give it a place to live that isn't your calendar.

That's the short version. The longer one starts with a sentence you may have said yourself: "I've done this a thousand times and I'm still the only one who can do it."

If you've used a method with real clients for years and you're the only one who can run it, that's the situation this article is about.

Don Sherman's method

The example we can point to is Don Sherman. He has led more than a thousand pursuits for engineering firms. A pursuit is one chase for a piece of work.

His capture method works. It also lived in his head, in workshops, and in binders. That meant only the largest firms could afford to run it.

The method was already systematic. What it lacked was a place to live that wasn't Don's calendar. Encoded in RevWin, every firm gets the discipline without the consultant on site.

What we built from it

We put his method into software, and the result is RevWin, which is live and owned and run by Inertia. Go/no-go discipline, the call on whether a pursuit is worth chasing, is in it. So are intelligence on the decision-makers, scoring of the firm's relationships, and a capture plan, which is the plan for winning one pursuit, generated from the firm's own pursuit data.

RevWin reports what the firm has logged. It never invents a relationship or a score to make a pursuit look better than it is.

It also shows a firm's active pursuits, pipeline fees, probable revenue, risk scores and trigger alerts in one view. RevWin is the capture method, not the system of record.

RevWin doubles what one business-development pro or seller-doer, the engineer or architect who also has to win the work, can carry. A firm of any size can now run a capture method that used to take Don in the room.

Here is how Don Sherman puts it: "What your team has created is just incredible. My process is now accessible to anyone in the industry. Previously, only the top 100 firms had the resources to pull it off." The top 100 firms figure is his, in his own words. It isn't ours.

RevWin keeps its own brand. Inertia is the maker.

Who this is for

Consultants and trainers whose method is proven and sold one engagement at a time. Experts whose method lives in their head, in workshops, and in binders. Methodology owners who want a product with their own name on it.

For them, the software replaces your calendar as the only place the method can run. It replaces binders and workshop decks. And it replaces only the largest clients being able to afford you.

What we build is the method's steps and decisions as the product's workflow. The scoring and the plans generate underneath, from the client's own data, and the software never invents a number to make things look better.

Whose name is on it

Yours. In RevWin's case the product carries its own brand, and Inertia is the maker. What we build is a screen your clients work in, with your brand on it.

When you don't need us

If you can write the method down and hand it to one more person, do that. We find the real problem before anything is built, and if what you asked for won't help, we say so.

If the method changes with each engagement, it may be too early to encode it. That is worth settling first.

The same goes if you haven't proven it yet.

Where we come in is when the method is proven, you sell it one engagement at a time, and you're the limit. Software for expert methods is what that looks like.
